Why do mobile phones work on airplanes in the U.S. on 11Sept01?

Why cell phones work in New York and Pennsylvania on 11Sept01, the anniversary of the end of last Arab Crusade in Europe, and not before or after? Technology for the use of mobile phones in aircraft is new and still has to carry the signal tested be strengthened to reach a ground station. So, why they work that day and not on other days?

I can not believe some of the answers here be given. Has anyone ever been to rely on their mobile phones during a flight? They do not work, plain and simple. If I add my own plane I have a few thousand Meter fly above the ground and get close to a city or highway to fly each signal. While the cell towers have a long range, they are designed to to reach horizontally not vertically. The next time in an airplane, leave your phone switched on. Check out the signal you will loose all the signs within 10 minutes and no signal again, until you arrive. The FCC requires that all phones be turned off, because mobile phones are not tso'd (Technical Service) or from authorized use on an airplane. It is extremely expensive to get a tso, tso, and each would require a cell phone for the FAA here to allow phones to be used in aircraft. It is too much Check work to to any phone carried by each passenger and make it possible for some others, and are not turned on. Are, in reality, Mobile phones do not go to cause any interference to navigation, so you leave your phone number and see the next time that happens. The calls from airplanes on 9 made / 11 has not been given mobile phones, they were produced by airphones in the backs of the seats on larger planes.
