While Compaq offers the R3000 series with several configurations, featured our test machine for this review, an Intel Pentium 4 processor at 2.8 GHz and 512 MB of PC2700 DDR memory. Our 15.4-inch widescreen model, a 4200RPM Hitachi 40GB hard drive, ATI Radeon 9000 with integrated graphics and an internal Broadcom 802.11b / g mini-PCI card. Compaq sells the R3000 series with Microsoft Windows XP Home operating system, or how our system was configured with Windows XP Pro.

The 15.4-inch WXGA TFT wide-screen runs at a native 1280×800 resolution. Compaq also offers the R3000 with the WSXGA + (1680×1050) and WUXGA (1920×1200) options, and a new "Brightview" Version of the WXGA display, offering supposedly for a higher contrast image.

Rounded corners give the black and sliver Presario R3000 a sleek, themselves as very durable over a few months of use. The top and bottom of the computer are made of black plastic with the center section, including the keyboard and palm rest, finished in a thinner-feeling silver plastic. With many competitors offering multimedia keys on their laptops, the R3000 offers only the above Volume keys. Compaq keyboard utility builds the F-keys are used as a multimedia keys, but you have to press them in conjunction with the function key. As many media applications like Winamp have noted, we still have keyboard shortcuts, Compaq solution is not to be very useful, and not as a two-key combo to use.
